Marijane Meaker (born May 27, 1927 in Auburn , New York) is an American writer.

Life

Marijane Meaker grew up in Auburn as the daughter of a manufacturer. She attended the Stuart Hall School in Virginia , the College in Vermont and studied literature from 1946 to 1949 at the University of Missouri . She worked as a secretary for Fawcett Publishing in New York City in the early 1950s . Her friend Louise Fitzhugh encouraged her to write.

She has published under her name and under various pseudonyms, addressing different reader and age groups. As Vin Packer , she wrote twenty detective novels between 1952 and 1969 , including Spring Fire, one of the first lesbian trivial novels . Between 1955 and 1972 she wrote non-fiction books on topics of homosexuality under the pseudonym Ann Aldrich , these were very successful on the paperback market and some sold in print runs of 400,000 copies. In 1960, she took the title of the final passage from salt and his prize ("Carol") by Highsmith in the anthology Carol in a thousand cities .

Since 1972 she has been writing children's and youth books under the pseudonym ME Kerr and has received several awards for this. In 1974 Gene Reynolds turned If I Love You, Am I Trapped Forever? (de: Save the tenderness ) a television production. For younger children she published books under the name Mary James . Her memories of the 1950s when she lived with Patricia Highsmith for two years came out in 2003.

After many years in New York, she moved to East Hampton .
