Uta Szyszkowitz (until her marriage: Uta Wiers-Keizer ; born September 23, 1935 in the Free City of Danzig ) is an Austrian literary translator.

Life

Uta Szyszkowitz was born in Sopot near Danzig. After fleeing in 1945, she grew up in Krefeld and studied theater and Romance studies in Berlin, Paris and Vienna . She received her doctorate in 1961 from the University of Vienna .

She then worked as a freelance literary translator from English and French, initially of around 25 stage plays and radio plays , later also of numerous fiction novels and short stories, youth literature and non-fiction , especially in the fields of history and politics.

In 1981 Szyszkowitz was a founding member of the Austrian Translators' Association (ÜG), today IG Translators, and afterwards worked for many years on the board, including a founding delegate and also a long-term board member of the European umbrella association of literary translators CEATL .

She has been married to the author and theater director Gerald Szyszkowitz since 1962 and is the mother of three children: Stefan, Tessa and Franz Szyszkowitz.
