MOH Farook ( MO Hassan Farook Maricar , Tamil : எம். ஓ. ஆசன் பாரூக் மரைக்காயர் ; born September 6, 1937 in Karaikal ; † January 26, 2012 in Chennai ) was an Indian politician ( Indian National Congress and DMK ) from the Union territory of Puducherry (Pondicherry ). He was three times Chief Minister ( Head of Government) of Puducherry, Lok Sabha MP, Indian State Secretary, Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Governor of the states of Jharkhand and Kerala .

Life

MOH Farook was born in Karaikal , then part of French India , in 1937 . His family comes from the Maraikkayar (Maricar) community, a Shafiʿite group of Tamil Muslims who traditionally settled in the coastal areas. As a student, MOH Farook took part in the agitation for an annexation of French India to the Republic of India in 1953/54, which was finally carried out de facto on November 1, 1954 . Farook completed his education with a bachelor's degree in economics .

After the annexation of French India had come into force de jure and the former French possessions had been formed into the union territory of Pondicherry in 1963 , MOH Farook entered the parliament of Pondicherry in the first elections in 1964 at the age of 27 for the Congress Party and became immediately to EP President ( speaker ) selected. From April 1967 to March 1968 he was briefly Chief Minister Puducherrys. Soon after, Farook left Congress and joined the Tamil nationalist party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which had recently come to power in neighboring Tamil Nadu. After DMK had also won the parliamentary elections in Pondicherry in 1969, MOH Farook acted for DMK as Chief Minister of the Union Territory from 1969 to 1974. In the 1974 election, the DMK in Pondicherry was replaced by the AIADMK , which had been split off from the DMK two years earlier. Against the background of the split between DMK and AIADMK, MOH Farook turned back to the Congress Party. In 1980 he moved into parliament for the Indira Gandhi wing of the Congress Party. After the election victory of the Congress Party, Farook returned 1985-1989 to the office of Chief Minister of Pondicherry.

In 1991 MOH Farook was elected for the Congress Party as a member of the Puducherry constituency in the Lok Sabha , the all-India lower house. From 1991 to 1992 he held the post of Secretary of State ( Minister of State ) for civil aviation and tourism in the PV Narasimha Raos cabinet . In 1996 Farook defended the Pondicherry constituency. In 1998 he lost it to the DMK candidate, but was successful again in the 1999 election.

Between 1975 and 2000, MOH Farook was a member of the central Haj Committee of the Indian government, which supports Indian Muslims on the Mecca pilgrimage . After leaving Lok Sabha in 2004, Farook was appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia . In 2010 he was appointed governor of Jharkhand state and in 2011 he was appointed governor of Kerala . Three months after taking office, Farook was admitted to a Chennai hospital with multiple myeloma . He died on January 26, 2012 at the age of 74.
