The M3 is the third subway line of the Istanbul metro . It had been in test operation with passengers since September 10, 2012 and was officially opened on March 31, 2013. It runs in the northwest of the European part of Istanbul and will initially have a length of 15.9 kilometers and 11 stations. The entire route lies in the tunnel and is supplied with energy by an overhead line. The stations have a length of 225 meters and are all accessible by elevators for people with reduced mobility. In the long term, the M3 is to be extended further south. In Bakirköy-İnçirli, a transfer station to the M1 A and in Bakirköy İDO a connection to the S-Bahn Istanbul (which has been connecting the European with the Asian part of Istanbul since October 29, 2013) and the ferry traffic are to be realized.

history

The construction of the M3 was triggered by Istanbul's application for the 2020 Olympic Games. A high-performance rail-bound high-speed traffic connection and the associated good accessibility of the sports facilities is an indispensable prerequisite for applying for the games. Independently of this, however, several large housing estates have also emerged in the north-western district of Başakşehir , in which a total of over 200,000 people live. These are to be better connected to the city center with the M3 in order to avoid further loads on the already congested road network from commuter traffic .

Construction of the line began in May 2006, with an estimated cost of $ 900 million. In the planning and construction phase, the line was still called M5. However, this was replaced by the name M3 in July 2012, as the planned subway line from Aksaray to Kirazlı, which was previously called M3, was renamed M1B and the name M3 became free. The shell of the tunnel was completed in March 2009 and the interior work in March 2012. The line has been in test operation with passengers since September 2012, in which, above all, the various automatic systems on the line, which are new for Istanbul, are being tested intensively. The official opening of the line by the operator Istanbul Ulasim has not yet taken place, so that the test operation does not take place with too many passengers.

The official line color of the M3 is light blue .

The M3 has its provisional southern terminus at Kirazlı station, where there is a transfer to the M1 B metro line , which was established on June 14, 2013. The M3 runs from here in a north-west direction and then branches off at the İkitelli Güney Sanayi station in a west branch to the Ataturk Olympic Stadium and in a north branch to Başakşehir.

Metropolis vehicles from the French manufacturer Alstom were procured for operation. A train consists of four cars, each with four doors on each side, which allow passengers to change quickly . The aim is to achieve an hourly transport capacity of 42,000 passengers in each direction on the M3 line at a cruising speed of 45 km / h and a maximum train speed of 85 km / h.
