The MAS-49 was the standard rifle in the French armed forces after World War II.
technology
The MAS-49 was created to implement the long overdue equipment of the army with a uniform and, above all, modern self-loading rifle . The previous equipment consisted of outdated models from our own production, but also from American rifles. In addition, there were German captured weapons, which made the supply of ammunition and spare parts even more difficult. The weapon works as a gas pressure loader , but does not have a gas piston. As with the Swedish Automatgevär m / 42 , the pressure is applied directly to the closure. The gas supply can be blocked so that rifle grenades can be fired.
modernization
Experience gained with the use of the weapon in the Indochina War and during the Suez Crisis resulted in a revised version in 1956, the MAS-49/56 . The new model was lighter and shorter, and a bayonet could also be attached. The weapon received a muzzle compensator , which also serves as a shooting cup for firing rifle grenades. The grenade sight blocked the gas channel when it was raised. In the model shown, an additional rubber piston shoe was added. Version 49/56 of the self-loader was produced until the 1980s and used in troop service until it was replaced by the FAMAS assault rifle .
