The MIDAL runs from the North Sea coast to southwest Germany . The diameter of the gas pipeline is 800/900 mm or 1000 mm, depending on the section. After construction began in May 1992, the pipeline was put into operation at the end of 1993.

The main line runs from Rysum to the nearby Jemgum storage facility , then to the Rehden natural gas storage facility , and from there to the Lippe compressor station , where WEDAL branches off in the direction of Aachen . In the further course the MIDAL connects at the compressor station Reckrod (Northeast Hesse) to the Saxony-Thuringia gas pipeline , which leads to the Czech border near Olbernhau in the Ore Mountains . From Reckrod, the MIDAL runs in a south-westerly direction to Ludwigshafen, where it continues in the natural gas pipeline to the Mannheim oil refinery (ERM) in Jockgrim .

From the northern end of the MIDAL, the Rehden-Hamburg gas pipeline branches off in a north-easterly direction.
