The MSC Megamax-24 , MSC-22,000-TEU-Class , or MSC-23,000-TEU-Class is a series of container ships of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The eleven ordered ships were delivered between 2019 and 2020 and are currently the largest container ships worldwide (as of 2019).
history
The series was commissioned in September 2017. The construction contract is split between two South Korean shipyards: Samsung Heavy Industries is delivering six of the ships at a reduced unit price of US $ 138 million, while Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is building five units. The operator of the series is the Geneva- based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The ships are used in liner services between Europe and East Asia.
technology
The ships classified by DNV GL belong to the group of ULCS container ships. The design is essentially based on the experience with the Olympic series . Like the units of the Triple E-Class (399.00 m length overall) and some comparable ship series in this largest container ship segment, they are around 400 meters long, but around 2.50 meters wider, so that they can stow an additional 24th row of containers transversely to be able to and thus to come to the larger number of container parking spaces.
The deckhouse is arranged like most ULCV series relatively far forward, which an improved line of sight makes and thus a higher front deck loading. The bunker tanks are arranged below the superstructure; they meet the relevant MARPOL regulations. The holds of the ships are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The maximum container capacity was initially given as 22,000 TEU; however, according to estimates by the specialist Alphaliner, the units were built with around 23,500 TEU. MSC states the container capacity as 23,756 TEU. There are 2024 connections for integral refrigerated containers .
The ships are powered by a two - stroke MAN B&W 11G95ME-C9.5 diesel engine that acts on a fixed propeller . The main engines for the ships to be built at Samsung will be supplied by Hyundai Heavy Industries, while Doosan Engine will build the main engines for the units to be built at DSME. The energy supply on board is ensured by three auxiliary diesel engines of the type MAN 9L32 / 40 and two of the type MAN 6L32 / 40. The generators come from STX Engine in Korea. The engines are equipped with particle filters. The propellers, each weighing 110 tons , are supplied by Mecklenburger Metallguss in Waren an der Müritz; they are the largest ship propellers ever built. To save energy, the units are equipped with air lubrication for ships . The ships are the first container ships to be equipped with fire-fighting monitors that are installed on the deckhouse and chimney. In the event of a fire in the containers on deck, they are intended to help fight the fire by cooling them or to slow down or stop the spread of the fire.
