Maarten van Severen

Maarten van Severen (born June 5, 1956 in Antwerp , Belgium ; † February 21, 2005 in Ghent , Belgium) was a Belgian furniture and interior designer .

biography

Maarten van Severen was the son of the abstract Belgian painter Dan Van Severen . He completed an architecture degree at the art school in Ghent. After he designed his first furniture in 1986, he founded a workshop for furniture design in 1987 . In 1990 he started working closely with Rem Koolhaas , a renowned architect and urban planner . During this time, van Severen also devoted himself to interior design . In addition to his work, he taught at various universities and academies . From 1996 to 2000 these included the University of Kortrijk , the Academie of Fine Arts in Maastricht , the Technical University of Delft , as well as the University of Barcelona and the University of Helsinki . In 1996 the collaboration with the Swiss company Vitra began . In 1998 he designed his most famous work, the “.03” chair, which Vitra is still producing today. Van Severen designed for other manufacturers such as Bulo (table "Schraag"), Edra and Pastoe.
