Mabel Garrison

Mabel Garrison Siemonn (born April 24, 1886 in Baltimore , † August 20, 1963 in New York City ) was an American opera singer (coloratura soprano).

Life

Garrison began her vocal training in Baltimore with Lucien Odenthal . From 1903 she studied at the Peabody Conservatory with Werner Edward Heimendahl , George Siemonn and Pietro Minetti and later in New York with Oscar Saenger and Herbert Witherspoon . In 1908 she married George Siemonn. As Mabel Simonn, she made her stage debut with the Aborn Opera Company in Boston in 1912 as Philine in Ambroise Thomas ' Mignon . She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1914 with a concert in which she sang arias by Verdi and Mozart .

She had her first stage role at the Metropolitan Opera as Frasquita in Carmen . Other roles were Adina in L'elisir d'amore ( Donizetti ), Bertha in Euryanthe ( Weber ), Biancofiore in Francesca da Rimini ( Zandonai ), Crobyle in Thaïs ( Massenet ), the little dew in Hansel and Gretel ( Humperdinck ), Gilda in Rigoletto ( Verdi ), Lady Harriet in Martha ( Flotow ), Oscar in Un ballo in maschera (Verdi), as a substitute for Frieda Hempel the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte , Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia ( Rossini ) and Urbain in Les Huguenots ( Meyerbeer ).

In 1916 she played at the New York Empire Theater in the American premiere of Mozart's '' Der Schauspieldirektor ''. From 1916 to 1919 she went on a concert tour of the USA with other singers. She had her last appearance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1921 in the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor . In the same year she made a guest appearance at the State Opera Unter den Linden , the Hamburg State Opera and the Cologne Opera and went on a world tour. In the 1925-26 season she was a member of the Chicago Opera , where she was successful as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia . From 1933 she taught singing at Smith College in Northampton.
