The Mackensen barracks is a former barracks in the Karlsruhe district of Rintheim . It was built from 1935 and named after the Prussian General Field Marshal August von Mackensen in 1938 .
The barracks are located in the north-east of Karlsruhe, on Rintheimer Querallee.
history
From 1936 to 1945 anti-tank troops of the Wehrmacht were stationed in the Mackensen barracks . In 1946, US troops moved into the area and renamed the barracks Phillips Barracks . After the US troops moved out in 1963, the Bundeswehr took over the barracks in 1964 under its original name, Mackensen-Kaserne . In 1997 members of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen submitted an application to the petition committee of the German Bundestag to have the barracks renamed. The application was denied and the barracks kept their name.
use
Parts of the barracks and accommodation buildings were used as emergency accommodation for students in 2001 and 2002 due to the lack of space in student dormitories. The Bundeswehr technical college also used parts of the building as accommodation. The Karlsruhe office of the Bundeswehr-Sozialwerk uses parts of the building and the Institute for Piston Engines of the University of Karlsruhe is located on part of the barracks area . This user calls this location KIT Campus East .
Accommodation for asylum seekers has been provided there since September 2014.
