Maclaurin is an impact crater southwest of little Mare Spumans in the eastern part of the moon's front . It lies northeast of the striking Langrenus Crater and west-northwest of the Gilbert Crater .
The crater structure of Maclaurin appears unusual, as a number of smaller craters adjoin its outer rim. In the north these are specifically the 'Maclaurin O' and 'Maclaurin K' flooded by lava . There are also satellite craters along the northeast, east and south sides. The three craters on the southern rim, which include 'Maclaurin A' and 'Maclaurin N', have penetrated the main crater far enough to flatten the outline at this point. The only vacancies on the perimeter are on the west side and a short distance to the south-east. Despite everything, Maclaurin shows an essentially circular shape.
The inner crater walls drop in a gentle slope towards the flattened crater floor. The middle area was newly formed , possibly by basaltic lava , and therefore has a slightly lower albedo due to its darker tint . A low central ridge rises in the center of the crater floor.
