Magglingen ( French Macolin ) is a bilingual place in the municipality Leubringen (French Evilard ), Bernese Seeland . Magglingen is located above Lake Biel at the southern foot of the Jura , more precisely on the southeast slope of the Magglingerberg.
Place naming
The name probably goes back to a Germanic personal name. It occurs mainly in the area of Obermagglingen, the so-called "Studmatten", since 1305.
The name Macalingen, Macoleyn 1342, Maglingen 1536 and Mahlingen 1856 was written.

Magglingen belongs to the municipality of Evilard . The area of the community area of 3.7 km² extends at the level of the anticlines of the Magglingerberg . It includes the clearing island of Evilard, which is surrounded by the Malewagwald (up to 765 m above sea level , French Malvaux ). To the southwest the area extends in a narrow strip over the clearing island of Magglingen to the height of the Magglingerberg, on which at 1070 m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is located. In 1997, 29% of the municipal area was in settlements, 40% in forests and woodlands, 30% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

Residents
With 2333 inhabitants (at the end of 2006), the municipality of Evilard is one of the larger municipalities in the Bernese Jura . 59% of the residents are German-speaking, 41% French-speaking. With many newcomers from the German-speaking area of the canton of Bern, the German-speakers now form a clear majority in the former French-speaking community (in 1989 only 52% German-speaking and 48% French-speaking).
The place Magglingen itself had 574 inhabitants at the end of 2006 (75% German and 25% French-speaking).

Magglingen is only a few kilometers away from Biel, the largest bilingual city in Switzerland. The political community Leubringen-Magglingen (German name) or Evilard-Macolin (French name) is consistently bilingual, hence the names of the villages in German and French. The Magglingen population is used to using the other language in everyday life. The children of Magglingen go to school in Evilard / Leubringen, where there are both German and French primary classes in the same school building. From the first grade onwards, the children can choose German or French, which they are unfamiliar with at home, as an optional subject. The kindergarten is mixed and bilingual.
history
Around 1580 Magglingen had six houses with 17 inhabitants, in 1770 there were 4 houses with 18 people and in 1793 the place had 38 inhabitants. In 1827 Magglingen had 10 houses, in 1895 20 of them with 121 inhabitants, in 1905 there were 18 houses and 106 inhabitants. Today around 700 people live in the village above Lake Biel.
Leubringen-Magglingen's development in the 19th century was determined politically by the Vienna Congress Act of 1815, by the allocation to the Oberamt Nidau (together with Biel / Bienne, Bözingen and Vingelz) and in 1832 to the district of Biel . Attempts to merge with Biel in 1902 were unsuccessful.
At the end of the 19th century Magglingen became famous as a health resort. Perched high above the Bieler Seeland, often free of fog and with a view of the Alps, the guests enjoyed themselves from far and near. The Kurhaus, built in 1876/77, and the funicular to Biel, the Biel-Magglingen Railway , are the remaining witnesses of this flourishing time.
Federal Office for Sport
The Federal Office for Sport (BASPO) has its seat in Magglingen. As the federal competence center for Swiss sport, the FOSPO has the mandate to promote sport and exercise in Switzerland - across all age and ability groups. The Eidgenössische Hochschule für Sport Magglingen is part of the BASPO and offers training and further education in the areas of sport and sport science. In Magglingen, top athletes also receive sports science support and optimal training opportunities so that they can train efficiently. That is why Magglingen is synonymous with the training camp for top Swiss sports.
