Macroglossus is a genus of fruit bats in the genus group of long-tongue fruit bat (Macroglossini) with two species that occur in Southeast Asia and the Australis region.

The genus includes the following species:

features

These fruit bats reach a head-torso length of 60 to 85 mm and a forearm length of 36 to 49 mm. The smaller species weighs only 12 to 18 g while the large long-tongue bat weighs 18.5 to 23 g. The tail is only a small stub and is usually hidden in the skin or fur. On the upper side, the fur has a red-brown color with a somewhat darker, often indistinct eel line on the back. The fur on the ventral side is light brown. Macroglossus differs from other representatives of the genus group in deviating details of the skull and teeth. In addition, males do not have any noticeable tufts of hair on their necks B. occur in the cave long-tongue bat ( Eonycteris ).

Way of life

The species are often found in evergreen forests in the lowlands or in mountains up to 2000 meters above sea level. They visit a number of other habitats in the Malay Archipelago and other islands . Larger rolled up leaves and occasionally the underside of larger branches or roofs of houses usually serve as resting places. The individuals sleep alone or in smaller groups of 5 to 10 members. They feed mainly on pollen and nectar and, to a lesser extent, on juices from soft fruits.

As far as is known, females give birth to a single young twice a year. They mate again shortly afterwards and store the sperm in their genitals for a few months before the actual pregnancy begins. This lasts 115 to 125 days for the dwarf long-tongue bat.
