Madagadipet or Madagadipattu ( Tamil : மதகடிப்பட்டு Matakaṭippaṭṭu [ ˈmad̪əɡʌɖiˌpːaʈːɯ ]) is a larger village with around 7,500 inhabitants in the southern Indian union territory of Puducherry . There is a medieval Shiva temple near the village .

location

Madagadipet is located approx. 22 km (driving distance) west of the city of Puducherry or approx. 17 km east of Viluppuram at an altitude of approx. 25 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is warm to hot; Rain falls mainly during the monsoon months from July to December.

population

The vast majority of the almost exclusively Tamil- speaking residents of the place are Hindus ; other religions hardly play a role in the rural regions of India. The male and female proportions of the population are roughly the same.

economy

Field management and, to a lesser extent, cattle breeding (cows, chickens) form the main livelihood of the population. There are also small traders, craftsmen, service providers and smaller industrial companies.

history

How far back the history of the place goes is unclear; since the middle of the 9th century the place belonged to the dominion of the Chola dynasty.

Attractions

The Thirukundankuzhi temple complex, which was extensively restored at the end of the 20th century, enclosed by a wall and consecrated to the Hindu god Shiva , consists of a main temple with a small, laterally closed vestibule ( mandapa ) and the cella ( garbhagriha ) with an unusual round tower structure with false entrances and a bulbous “ hood ” with a vase ( kalasha ). In the corners of the flat roof there are several lying Nandi bulls. A similarly designed, but significantly smaller shrine is in the immediate vicinity.

In front of the temple there is a rectangular square, which may have served as a large thatched assembly hall ( mahamandapa ) - today another small Nandi bull rests here.
