Madge Blake
Madge Blake (born May 31, 1899 in Kinsley , Kansas , † February 19, 1969 in Pasadena , California ) was an American actress.
life and career
Madge Blake was born in Kansas to a strictly Methodist circus rider and was also the cousin of actor Milburn Stone . She wanted to embark on an acting career at an early age, but was initially discouraged by her father. Blake and her husband, James, with whom she had a child, initially worked for the state. During the Second World War, the couple worked in Utah for the Manhattan Project . From the mid-1940s, Blake, who had since become a grandmother, followed her original career aspiration and learned her acting craft at the Pasadena Playhouse . She made her film debut in 1946 with a small role as choir lady in Henry Koster's musical film Fulfilled Dreams at the side of Kathryn Grayson and June Allyson .
In Hollywood films, Madge Blake - a small, plump character actress - was mostly limited to minor supporting roles, in which she often played funny aunts, mothers or ladies from better society. In the 1950s, she starred in several musical films alongside Gene Kelly , for example as the talkative presenter Dora Bailey in the opening scenes of the classic film You should be my lucky star . She was more successful on television, where she took on recurring roles in the television series The Real McCoys , Grown Up, and The Joey Bishop Show . Blake was remembered best as the friendly but rather silly aunt Harriet Cooper in the television series Batman . She played this role from 1966 in a total of 98 episodes, but towards the end of the series, her character appeared less often, which was due to Blake's now flagging health. She died in February 1969 at the age of 69.
