Madison Avenue
The Madison Avenue is a street in Manhattan in New York City . It runs as a one-way street from Madison Square (on 23rd Street ) in the south to Harlem River Drive (on 142nd Street ) in the north, where it becomes Madison Avenue Bridge . It is located between the parallel streets Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue . It runs through Midtown , the Upper East Side , East Harlem and Harlem . It is named after Madison Square, whose name goes back to James Madison , fourth President of the United States. The road has a length of 9.7 km.
Madison Avenue was not part of the original Commissioners' plan of 1811 but was not built until 1836 through the efforts of politician and lawyer Samuel B. Ruggles .
Madison Avenue is known for various advertising agencies that have settled on this street. The name Madison Avenue is now also a metonym for the American advertising industry .
