Mads Tolling (born July 5, 1980 in Copenhagen ) is an American violinist, violist and composer of Danish descent. As a member of the Turtle Island Quartet , Tolling won Grammy Awards in the “Best Classical Crossover Album” category for the albums 4 + Four (2006) and A Love Supreme - The Legacy of John Coltrane (2008). Tolling also worked on Stanley Clarke's album The Toys of Men (2007) . In 2011 he was 1st violinist of the Turtle Island Quartet, soloist in the band of bassist Stanley Clarke and band leader of his Mads Tolling Quartet.

Career

Tolling was born and raised in Copenhagen , Denmark . He moved to the United States , studied at Berklee College of Music, and graduated summa cum laude. Tolling received the Sankt Annae's Award for Musical Excellence in Denmark. He has also received grants from Queen Margrethe, the Sonning Foundation, and the Berklee Elvin Jones Award. Since graduating from Berklee College of Music, Tolling has toured the world with the Stanley Clarke Band and the Turtle Island Quartet. Tolling has also played with Al Di Meola , Kenny Barron , Paquito D'Rivera and Leo Kottke .

Mads Tolling Quartet

Mads Tolling founded the Mads Tolling Trio in 2007 and recorded the album Speed ​​of Light (2008). Six of the eleven tracks on the album are his own compositions. The following year Tolling added a drummer to his trio, and the Mads Tolling Quartet has existed ever since. The quartet has performed at Yoshi's Oakland, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, San Jose Jazz Flavors and Jazz, Kuumbwa Jazz, Throckmorton Theater, Moody's Bistro, and the Russian River Jazz Festival.

The Playmaker

On Mads Tolling's second CD release The Playmaker , whose creation was supported by the Yamaha Corporation of America and Connolley Music, Inc., Stanley Clarke, Russell Ferrante and Stefon Harris participated . Seven of the eleven tracks on the album are compositions by Tolling. He sometimes plays his instrument like a fiddle, like a saxophone and like an acoustic and electric violin. The Playmaker is a journey into jazz , fusion , funk , classical music , Danish folk along with rock 'n' roll arrangements of Led Zeppelin's track Black Dog and Radiohead's track Just . The album The Playmaker , released on Madsman Records / City Hall, was released on October 20, 2009.
