The Magdalenenkirche (Église Sainte-Madeleine) is a Catholic church complex in Strasbourg . The church, which was almost completely destroyed twice, is now a mixture of Gothic and simplified Art Nouveau .

history

From the former monastery church of the Magdalenerinnen , the last sacred Gothic building in Strasbourg (completed in 1478), only the late Gothic choir with original fresco remains has been preserved since a devastating fire in 1904 . Today it serves as a chapel. In the Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame there are fragments of the numerous lead-glass windows from the workshop of Peter Hemmel von Andlau . John Calvin preached and held services at this church.

Today's church was added at right angles to the old choir by Fritz Beblo around 1907. It has a barrel vault based on the model of Michael’s Church in Munich and a striking bell tower. Beblo's new building is considerably larger than its late medieval predecessor.

For its part, Beblo's factory was badly damaged by British and American bombings on August 11, 1944, and was rebuilt unchanged in 1958.

Organs

In 1965 the church received a Roethinger organ , which is considered to be one of the most versatile in town. Before it was destroyed in 1944, the church had already owned a Roethinger organ. The organ of the original church, built by Andreas Silbermann in 1718, was sold to the city of Lampertheim in 1799 and has been lost since 1876. Today's instrument has 48 registers on four manuals and a pedal. It was last extensively renovated in 2004 by the organ builder Kern (Strasbourg).

In the former choir of the church, which now serves as a side chapel, the actual Gothic part of the building, an organ by Andreas Silbermann was installed at the end of 2012 , which was originally built in 1719 for the Marmoutier Abbey . The listed instrument was restored by organ builder Quentin Blumenroeder from Haguenau after it had been stored for decades in an inaccessible part of Palais Rohan .

Adoration of the Shepherds

On the back wall of the choir hangs a large depiction (oil on canvas, 382 × 282 cm) of the Adoration of the Shepherds . This anonymous painting from the 18th century, presumably based on the Italian model, was formerly in the sacristy of the Strasbourg cathedral and was placed at the current location at an as far as unknown date. It has been a listed building since 1980.

Way of the Cross

Until the fire of 1904, the church had a way of the cross by Joseph Melling , which consisted of fifteen individual paintings (oil on canvas). For a long time it was assumed that only four stations had survived the catastrophe, but a fifth painting reappeared in 2017, albeit in extremely need of restoration.

Surroundings

A part of the former cloister of the former monastery complex around the adjoining school building can still be visited.
