Andy travels back to Hong Kong with his entourage, unsuccessful. But the KGB is still after the three. Andy teams up with Shen's sister Winnie and continues to search for Shen. In the meantime, Pin-Pin discovers the crystal, which can talk and has very strange powers. Together they do a lot of jokes. At some point, Karov lures Andy into a trap and while Andy is in jail, he kidnaps Pin-Pin. With the help of the Interpol agent Cindy Morgan, Andy manages to recover both the pin and the crystal.

Everyone is traveling back to Greece to bring the crystal back to the Acropolis . There is a showdown with the KGB agents. Andy and his friends find out that the crystal is extraterrestrial and belongs to a pilot who has since been petrified. When they put him in a UFO-like structure, he flies with the petrified pilot and Karov, who at the wrong moment reaches for the crystal back into the galaxy.

background

Magic Crystal is influenced by Hollywood films like ET and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom . He sometimes combines hard action scenes with rather childish humor, which director Wong Jing similarly accommodated in City Hunter . In addition to the almost exclusively Chinese crew, the two martial arts actors Cynthia Rothrock and Richard Norton can be seen in the film. It is also one of the first roles of the future star Andy Lau .

publication

The film was released in Germany on April 14, 1988 on video by Splendid. A DVD version followed first as a bonus film on Eastern Classics DVD Vol. 7 (main film: Dynamite Heroes ) and then as part of the Cynthia Rothrock Collection, there under the title Jade Crystal .

criticism

The story of the film is a bold copy of ET and Indiana Jones mixed with exaggerated humor. The fight scenes, which are choreographed in the typical Hong Kong martial arts style, are praised.

“In return, the viewer is pampered with handsome and long-lasting martial art interludes, which are very well staged in terms of choreography, the actors show their fighting skills in Magic Crystal and this is adequately presented to the viewer! (...) Magic Crystal is fun, brawls, humor and a little slapstick bring the viewer joy into the cinema at home. "

- Stefan Retro : Retro-film.info

“In the style of the“ Power Man ”series, Wong Jing's“ Magic Crystal ”is a completely senseless mixture of silly slapstick and fast-paced martial arts scuffles. The effects around the chattering lump from space are not only mercilessly cheap from today's point of view, but in their serious self-image they are just as hilarious as the German synchronization. (...) For fans of lively Eastern trash, “Magic Crystal” is a sheer celebration and deservedly to be mentioned in the same breath as “The Legend of the Golden Pearl” and “Prince of the Sun”. With such hair-raising fantasy-adventure-karate nonsense, bruises on the thighs are practically inevitable. A real Wong Jing through and through! "
