Magnesium hydrogen citrate is a magnesium salt of citric acid . It crystallizes with different contents of crystal water and forms colorless crystals .

properties

Magnesium hydrogen citrate hydrate is a white, odorless solid that is soluble in water. Magnesium compounds reduce nerve and muscle excitability. A loose stool or diarrhea can occur as undesirable effects of magnesium substitution. In the case of extreme overdosing, paralysis of the central nervous system (magnesium anesthesia) can occur - with regard to dosability, a medical distinction is made between parenteral and oral administration, the latter is considered safe because in this way an increase in the magnesium serum concentration only up to 1.1 mmol / l , with a long-term intake for several weeks, is possible. Oral ingestion in excess leads to excretion via the kidneys and intestines (non-pathological diarrhea).

use

Magnesium hydrogen citrate is used in medicine as a laxative . If necessary, it is also taken directly or dissolved in water in order to increase the magnesium ion content in the human body. Preparations can be purchased from the pharmacy without a prescription .
