Magnisudis is a genus of fish from the order of the lizard fish relatives (Aulopiformes), which occurs in all oceans.

features

Magnisudis species reach a length of about 55 cm. They have an elongated, strong body and a short, broad head. Your eyes are big. The jaw teeth are tiny. In contrast to the (other) Barracudina species, the ploughshare in Magnisudis is toothed. The gill rakes are designed as flat bases with four long filaments. Magnisudis shares this feature with Alepisaurus and is not found in the barracudinas (see systematics). The gill rakes of the first gill arch extend along both sides of the tongue into the front mouth section. The tip of the tongue is far forward, close to the mandibular symphysis . The side line is covered by a single row of large circular scales, each with a central pore. The rest of the body is covered by very small round scales that fall off easily. The anal fin has few fin rays compared to the barracudinas .

Systematics

Magnisudis were formerly part of the family of the barracudinas (Paralepididae). The American ichthyologist Matthew P. Davis assigns Magnisudis as sister genus of Anotopterus to the Alepisauridae , the sister group of the barracudinas , based on morphological and DNA comparisons .
