Anotopterus (= "without dorsal fin" ( size : a = without, noton = back, pteryx , - igos = fin)) is a genus of lizard fish relatives (Aulopiformes). It occurs in cool temperate and polar seas.

features

The fish are one meter to 1.5 meters long. With their elongated shape and their deeply split mouth with large fangs, they resemble the related lance fish ( Alepisaurus ). However, they lack the dorsal fin. On the other hand, there is a well-developed adipose fin. The skin is flaky and there are no luminous organs . The pelvic fins are tiny with 9 to 11 rays . The pectoral fins have 12 to 15 fin rays. The number of vertebrae is 78 to 83.

Way of life

Anotopterus species live from the surface of the sea to depths of 2500 to 5000 meters. Adult Anotopterus tend to live in cold sea regions, while juvenile fish can be found in warmer regions. The fish feed mainly on smaller fish. In Anotopterus nikparini , molluscs , crustaceans , worms, jellyfish and salps were ingested , and in Anotopterus vorax small cephalopods . The prey fish also include related species from the barracudine family , such as Risso's salmon sparrow ( Arctozenus risso ), Notolepis coatsi and the Nordic salmon sparrow ( Paralepis coregonoides )

species

So far, three types have been described:

External system

Anotopterus belongs within the lizardfish relatives to the suborder Alepisauroidei or the superfamily Alepisauroidea (at Davis). It is the only genus of the Anotopteridae family after Fishbase . The American ichthyologist Joseph S. Nelson puts the genus in his standard work on fish systematics Fishes of the World, however, in the family of the barracudinas (Paralepididae). Davis assigns the genus in a recent study on the systematics of the Aulopiformes together with its sister genus, the Barracudina genus Magnisudis , Alepisaurus and Omosudis to the family Alepisauridae , which thus receives an expanded composition.
