Magnus - The Mozart of Chess is a Norwegian documentary. He portrays the Norwegian world chess champion Magnus Carlsen , who is also called "Mozart of chess". It is the first full-length documentary by director Benjamin Ree .

In a time frame of ten years, Magnus shows the rapid rise of the chess player with a focus on his way to world champion in 2013. In addition to the filming, Ree was able to evaluate over 500 hours of archive footage for his documentation.

The film premiered on April 14, 2016 at the Tribeca Film Festival . Its European premiere followed on June 24th at the Munich Film Festival . At the 44th International Norwegian Film Festival in Haugesund, he was awarded The Ray of Sunshine . The jury justified its decision, among other things, with the fact that the documentation puts people first and proves that love and community get the best out of someone. A dense, respectful dramaturgy and humor contribute to getting very close to the protagonist.

Magnus started in German cinemas on November 10, 2016 with NFP * distribution .
