Magnus level , also: Magnus levelius (born May 15, 1547 in Rostock , † 1619 in Stettin ) was a German physician and mathematician .

Life

Magnus level was the son of the professor of rhetoric Konrad level . In 1569 he acquired a master's degree, the following year a doctorate at the medical faculty with a paper on the plague . In Rostock he taught mathematics and astrology , in 1579 he was appointed professor of mathematics in Helmstedt . In 1581 he returned to Rostock and was appointed full professor of mathematics here in 1591. In 1589 he finally married a daughter of the Rostock mayor. At an early stage, level made contact with exceptional scholars of his time such as Tycho Brahe and Jost Bürgi . In 1593 he was granted the imperial privilege of protecting parts of his works. He was dean and in 1593/94 he was university rector for one semester in Rostock and was already in favor of German-language lectures.

In 1605, together with Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler , Ebene became the adviser to Emperor Rudolf II in Prague . In 1611 he returned to Rostock, lived there impoverished and in 1615 accepted a teaching position from the Duke of Pomerania, Philip II, in Stettin .

Level is considered the father of blood transfusion , dealt with intravenous injection ( Chirurgia infusoria ) and developed forceps for delivery . Throughout his life, Ebene fought for mechanics based on experiments.

In 1604 his daring work Thesaurus rerum selectarum magnarum, dignarum, utilium, marinus, pro genere humane was published . In this he spoke about various projects that sounded futuristic at the time and described the theoretical requirements for the construction of airships , submarines , ship bridges, automatic firearms , water arts and bath stoves, as well as memory art. He already represented the idea of ​​an evolution of species.
