Magui Bétemps

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Magui Bétemps , also Magui Béltemps, (born January 8, 1947 as Maria Rita Maquignaz in Ivrea , † November 19, 2005 ) was an Italian teacher, musician and singer. She is considered the most important representative of the chanson in the Franco-Provençal dialect of the Aosta Valley .

Life

Maria Rita Maquignaz comes from a family from Valtournenche and was born on January 8, 1947 in the Piedmontese city of Ivrea. She was married to the historian and folklorist Alexis Bétemps , who headed the Institut Center d'études francoprovençales "René Willien" in Saint-Nicolas in the Aosta Valley. The couple lived in the village of Sorreley in Saint-Christophe .

In Saint-Christoph Magui Bétemps performed with the local theater company Lé badeun de Choueley and in Châtillon with the Theater la Veillà , which again publicly propagated the regional dialect. She played her own concerts with various musicians.

As a modern singer from the Aosta Valley, Magui Bétemps had great success. Her French and Franco-Provencal songs in the style of folk music tell of life in the Italian mountain valley, of cultural change after the Second World War, of rural exodus and also of the loss of the traditional regional language due to the rapid spread of Italian due to modernization and increasing mobility. Michelle Impérial writes in a portrait of the committed singer in the regional magazine Jeunesse Aujourd'hui : "Mais moi j'aime mon patois, mon français et les montagnes autour de moi, je me sens Italienne oui, mais encore plus Valdôtaine."

effect

Magui Bétemps died on November 19, 2005 at the age of 58. In the following year, prominent singers from the Aosta Valley, including the Trouveur valdotèn , held the memorial concert L'oiseau chante encore - Souvenir de Magui Bétemps with their best-known songs in Aosta .

To commemorate the cultural initiative Magui Bétemps with the group Lé badeun de Choueley , the Aosta Valley Cultural Assessorate , together with the Vignolet Association in Arnad and the Fédérachòn valdoténa de téatro populéro theater association, organized the Concours d'écriture théâtrale Magui Bétemps Aostat competition for dialect writers.

The association for dialect music Patouè eun Mezeucca , founded in 2014, performs the songs of Magui Bétemps again and took up their cultural concerns with their own works.
