Maguy Marin (born June 2, 1951 in Toulouse ) is a French dancer and choreographer and one of the most important representatives of modern dance theater .

Life

Maguy Marin was born the youngest of four children to Spanish parents who fled to France after the Spanish Civil War . She studied classical ballet at the Toulouse Conservatory , then went to Paris and continued her studies with Nina Vyrubowa. Her first engagement as a dancer was in the ensemble of the Théâtre national de Strasbourg .

The desire for more experimental dance forms and a broader technical repertoire led her to Brussels to study with Maurice Béjart and his recently founded École Mudra . There she learned to explore and shape her possibilities as a dancer. With other mudra students she founded the dance group Chandra , which dissolved in 1974. She then danced for three years in Béjart's Ballet du XXe siècle . At this time she started choreographing herself. From 1978 she worked with Daniel Ambash in Brussels and created her own productions, which showed Marin's strong affinity for dance theater .

After returning to France, from the beginning of the 1980s she worked with other dancers, from which the company led by Marin emerged in 1981 , further choreographies at the art and culture center of Créteil , where in 1985 she created the first ensemble of the newly founded "National Center for Choreography" posed.

In 1998 the company moved to the National Center for Choreography in Rillieux-la-Pape . After thirteen years at this place of work, Marin returned to Toulouse in 2012. There, however, she found an inadequate work environment for her and after three years still considered the conditions to be too bad to settle there permanently with her ensemble. As a result, in 2015 she moved into her art center RAMDAM in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon , which has since been home to Marin's work.

Marin regularly seeks collaboration with other creatives, directors, musicians and visual artists. The multiple award-winning choreographer performs worldwide with her company and her productions. In 2016 she was honored with the Golden Lion for her life's work at the Venice Dance Biennale .
