Mahavir Prasad ( Hindi : महावीर प्रसाद Mahāvīr Prasād ; born November 11, 1939 in Gorakhpur , Uttar Pradesh ; † November 28, 2010 in Delhi ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC) .

biography

After graduation, he was long than 34 teachers for Geography at the Gandhi Inter College operates in Gorakhpur. Prasad began his political career in the state of Uttar Pradesh and was a member of the legislative assembly there from 1974 to 1977.

In 1980 he switched to federal politics and was elected for the first time as a candidate of the INC to the member of the lower house ( Lok Sabha ) and belonged to it after his re-elections in 1984 and 1989 from the seventh to the end of the ninth electoral period in 1991. During this time he was also Deputy Minister for Railways in the government of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi between February 1988 and July 1989 . After a cabinet reshuffle, he was Minister of State for Mining and Steel in the Mining Ministry from July 1989 until the end of Gandhi's term in office in December 1989.

On June 14, 1995, he was appointed governor of the state of Haryana and held this position until 2000. In the meantime he was at the same time from September 18 to November 16, 1995 and again from April 23, 1996 to July 26, 1997 Governor of the state of Himachal Pradesh . In 2004 Prasad was again elected a member of the Lok Sabha and belonged to this after his re-election in 2009 as a representative of the constituency of Bansgaon from the 14th legislative period until his death.

Shortly after the elections for the 14th Lok Sabha on May 22, 2004, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appointed him to the newly formed government as Minister for Small Industry and for Agricultural and Rural Industries. Prasad held this office until May 22, 2009.
