The Mahmud Mosque ( Urdu مسجد محمود DMG Masǧid Maḥmūd , German , 'mosque of the prize-worthy' ) on Forchstrasse in Zurich is the first mosque in Switzerland and was built by the Ahmadiyya .
history
The first representative of the Ahmadiyya in Switzerland was Sheikh Nasir Ahmad from 1946 to 1962. He prepared the way for the construction of the mosque. The foundation stone for the mosque was laid on August 25, 1962 by Amatul Hafiz Begum, daughter of the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community , Mirza Ghulam Ahmad . The mosque was opened in June 1963 in the presence of the President of the 17th session of the UN General Assembly, Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan and Zurich's Mayor Emil Landolt.
meaning
The Mahmud Mosque is the first mosque in Switzerland and is therefore of historical significance for the history of Islam and the Muslims in Switzerland. It also forms the headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Switzerland and is the place of activity of the leading imam , the missionary for Switzerland.
building
The mosque covers 179 m², contains a dome and, at around 18 meters, a disproportionately high minaret . There is a crescent moon on the top of the minaret. However, the minaret is not used to proclaim the Adhān . The architects Ernst Göhner and Fritz Badertscher were responsible for the design and implementation of the building plan. The construction costs were around 350,000 SFr.
Community
The Ahmadiyya community has around 700 members in Switzerland. An imam presides over the Mahmud mosque and looks after the members of the Ahmadiyya community in Switzerland. Since its inception, eight imams called Murrabis have presided over the mosque. Today Walter Walid Tariq Tarnutzer is head of the mosque.

Religion Week 2013
In November 2013, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the mosque, the minaret was veiled in the colors of the rainbow flag , an international symbol of peace and tolerance. With this, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community wanted to send a visible sign for peace and the beginning of the “Week of Religion” from November 2nd to 9th, 2013.
