Aşık Mahzuni Şerif (real name Şerif Cırık ; * 1940 in Berçenek near Afşin , Kahramanmaraş , Turkey ; † May 17, 2002 in Cologne ) was an Alevi-Turkish poet, singer, composer and musician on the Saz .

Live and act

Mahzuni Serif finished elementary school in 1950 and went to middle school in Elbistan . In 1957 he attended the military school in Mersin and from 1960 the technical military school in Ankara , but was later expelled from school due to a lack of discipline. From 1961 Mahzuni Serif dealt professionally with music. Since 1964 he has published about 400 records, 50 cassettes and published nine books. In his songs he took up social and political issues, sometimes influenced by the Alevi philosophy. For his musical achievements he was given the suffix Aşık (folk poet).

In 1972 a fire destroyed his house and archive in Gaziantep. Mahzuni Serif was from 1989 to 1991 chairman of the People's Singing Association ( Halk Ozanlar Dernegi ). In 1997 he suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and was treated in Ulm .

He was tried on December 27, 2001 by a Turkish State Security Court for his testimony

accused. The proceedings were still ongoing by his death. In the same year he developed heart problems and suffered a heart attack . He died in a hospital in Cologne in 2002 and was buried in a cemetery near the Hajji Bektash mausoleum .
