Mai 1968 (original title in French May 1968 , in Catalan Maig 1968 ) is a painting by Joan Miró , created between 1968 and 1973, which is in the permanent collection of the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona .

description

Miró painted the 200 × 200 centimeter work in acrylic and oil paint on canvas . On a white background, he distributed various areas across the format in a series of lively colors that are typical of this creative period: blue, red, green, yellow and orange. The surfaces are overlaid by strong black lines and a large black point in the upper half of the picture. Painting with his fingers, Miró created the impression of a color ball that burst on the canvas and ran down the entire height. The composition is complemented by prints of hands.

The paintings from this bubbling period of Miró were part of an exhibition on the occasion of the artist's 75th birthday, which took place in different locations: the Fondation Maeght , the Fundació Joan Miró, the Cathedral of Barcelona and the House of Art in Munich .

Historical context

In the spring of 1968, students at the Paris Universities of Sorbonne and Nanterre initiated a protest movement that lasted for almost a month and a half, advocating an improvement in study conditions and the democratization of universities and society as a whole. The student protests, which became known as the Paris May or May 1968 and were also picked up in other countries, were gradually joined by broader groups of the population and led to unrest, a general strike and finally political and economic reforms in France. Joan Miró sympathized with the protests and subsequently created his work in May 1968 as a tribute to the vitality and ideals of the movement.
