Maihueniopsis nigrispina is a species of plant in the genus Maihueniopsis from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet nigrispina means '(Latin nigrispinus) black prickly, black thorny'.

description

Maihueniopsis nigrispina grows in low shrubs, is richly branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 10 centimeters (rarely up to 20 centimeters). The more or less upright, elongated to ellipsoidal, twisting shoot sections are cloudy green or reddish purple and humped in the youth stage. The areoles , 2 to 3 millimeters in diameter , are richly covered with wool and glochids . The three to five weak, 2.5 to 3 centimeters long thorns are only formed on the upper areoles. They are straight, spread out and more or less purple-black (rarely also whitish).

The purple to orange-red flowers are 2 to 2.5 centimeters long. Your pericarpel is blackish red. The more or less spherical smooth, red-purple fruits have a diameter of 1 centimeter. The seeds are colored fuchsia pink.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Maihueniopsis nigrispina is widespread in the Bolivian departments of Potosí and Tarija , in the Chilean region of Tarapacá near Colchane and in the Argentine provinces of Jujuy and Salta in the Puna vegetation of the high altitudes of the Andes at altitudes of 3400 to 3900 meters.

It was first described as Opuntia nigrispina in 1898 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Roberto Kiesling placed the species in the genus Maihueniopsis in 1999 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Tephrocactus nigrispinus (K.Schum.) Backeb. (1936) and Platyopuntia nigrispina (Schum.) F. Ritter (1980, incorrect name, ICBN article 11.4).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
