Maija ( Russian Ма́йя ; Yakut Майа ) is a village (selo) in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in Russia with 7288 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is 45 km as the crow flies southeast of the republic capital Yakutsk on the lake of the same name, without any drainage.
Maija belongs to Ulus Megino-Kangalasski and is located a good 30 km southeast of its administrative center Nizhny Bestjach . The village is the seat and only locality of the rural municipality (selskoje posselenije) Selo Maija.
history
The place, mainly inhabited by Yakuts , was founded in 1902. Since 1930 Maija was the administrative seat of an ulus ( Rajons ), but lost this function in 2007 to the smaller, but closer to Yakutsk and more conveniently located urban-type settlement Nizhny Bestjach.
