The Main Range is a mountain range in the Great Dividing Range in Australia , which extends in Queensland over a distance of about 25 kilometers from Wilsons Peak , a 1230  m high mountain on the southern border with New South Wales , to the Cunningham Gap , a 787  m high pass. It is part of the mountainous Scenic Rims in southeast Queensland.

Demarcation

In addition to the Main Range in Queensland, the area with the highest mountains in the Australian Snowy Mountains is also known as the Main Range .

description

The mountain range consists of basalt derived from lava that emerged from volcanoes in the Tertiary 25 to 22 million years ago . The lava was of low viscosity and therefore flowed over large areas. Sufficient discharge over long periods of time from the volcanic vents piled up massive layers. In addition to basalt, trachyte , a volcanic rock , also formed to a lesser extent . The basalt layers originally reached a thickness of more than 1000 meters; today the mightiest ones are only about 900 meters high because of erosion . The basalt outflows from the Main Range shield volcano reached a thickness of 15 to 25 meters in individual layers and that from trachyte up to 80 meters. Sandstone lies beneath the basalt and garb layers .

The highest mountain in the Main Range is Mount Superbus with a height of 1,375 meters, the third highest point in Queensland.

The Main Range National Park , which protects nature and part of the Gondwana rainforests of Australia , is located in these mountains.

The Main Range is dominated by the Main Range Volcano , a shield volcano . Other neighboring shield volcanoes such as the Focal Peak Volcano and the much larger Tweed Volcano are not part of the Main Range.
