Sooraj R. Barjatya's directorial debut was one of the most successful Bollywood films of the 1980s and made the then 23-year-old Salman Khan a star. The film has been classified as an all time blockbuster by boxofficeindia.com.

Karan lives in the country with his daughter Suman. While he is working in Dubai to earn money for Suman's wedding, she lives with Karan's rich childhood friend Kishen in his city villa. Kishen's son Prem has to marry Seema, who is the only daughter of Kishen's business partner Ranjeet, but soon falls in love with Suman. She finally returns his feelings. Kishen believes she has abused his hospitality and asks her to leave his home. So Suman goes back to her village. Prem decides to follow Suman. Meanwhile, Karan returns and is very disappointed with Kishen's behavior. Because of this, he forbids Prem to approach Suman. To prove that he can support a woman without a father's money, Prem has to work very hard. Finally, Karan allows Prem to hold his daughter's hand.
