In her youth, Maja Sommerlund was not only a handball player, but also dedicated herself to swimming. After starting her handball career in Denmark, Sommerlund moved to Spain in 1998. After a season with the Champions League participant CB Elda Prestigio , she went to Ferrobus KU Mislata . In the 2000/01 season she reached the quarter-finals with this club. After a total of four years in Spain, the circle runner joined the German handball Bundesliga club Frankfurter HC in 2002 . With this club she won the DHB Cup in 2003 and the German championship in 2003/04 . After these successes, she played for two years with Thuringian HC from 2005 to 2007 .

Since the second year in Thuringia was sportingly disappointing for Sommerlund, she joined the reigning German champions 1. FC Nürnberg in 2007 , who had only a few experienced players after financial problems. In the new season, the circle runner had to play in defense for the first time in her career because of the small squad. In 2008 she won the German championship with Nuremberg. At the end of the season, Sommerlund surprisingly did not get a new contract with the financially weak Nürnbergers. She then moved to the second division promoted VfL Sindelfingen . With the team she was champions of the 2008/09 season and rose to the Bundesliga. In summer 2010 she left Sindelfingen. From 2013 she played for the Swiss first division club ATV / KV Basel. From the summer of 2014 she also worked as an assistant trainer in Basel. In summer 2015 she left Basel and ended her career.

Maja Sommerlund is studying sports marketing and holds a trainer's license for handball and swimming.
