The Majesty of the Seas is a barge and the largest model cruise ship in the world, based on the ocean cruise ship Majesty of the Seas . It is 33.50 meters long and 4.75 meters wide. The height is 4.60 meters with a draft of 1.06 meters. The ship has a displacement of 90 tons. With a height from the waterline of 3.54 m (without chimney ; 5.54 m with chimney), the ship is able to sail through the locks and canals of Europe.

Emergence

The trained electrician and former miner François Zanella (* 1949, † 2015), whose hobby was ship model building in his youth , built the ship according to original plans on a scale of 1: 8 almost entirely on his own in eleven years of construction, around 30,000 working hours and own costs of 500,000 euros in his garden in Morsbach . Originally, he had only planned to build the ship on a scale of 1:16 (16.25 meters in length), but his wife persuaded him to build a larger ship. He received support in the form of components such as the two propellers and furnishings such as furniture, carpets and bathroom from various shipyards, including the builder of the great Majesty of the Seas , the shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire .

Furnishing

The interior is not true to scale - it is rather a houseboat with a comparatively luxurious interior. The interior furnishings are largely made up of components from eight cruise liners provided by the Zanella shipyards. A dining room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a bunk are distributed over two floors and 160 m² of living space. There is also an elevator , a garage for a small car and a 60 m² terrace on the roof. The ship is powered by two diesel engines with 100 hp each  . In the bulbous bow two are bow thruster installed, each with 52 HP for simpler embarking or disembarking maneuvers.

Launch

The transport of the ship to Saargemünd in Lorraine began on June 21, 2005 and lasted three days. The ship was brought overland to the Saar for the 60-kilometer route by low-loader . On June 23, 2005, the Majesty of the Seas was launched into the Saar and christened by the rower Maud Fontenoy . Until the end it was not entirely certain whether the ship would be lying straight in the water or list. The transport attracted a lot of media interest in France and was accompanied by several thousand onlookers and television crews.

The city of Sarreguemines took over the cost of the transport in the amount of around 120,000 euros - Zanella had to open his ship to tourists for a few months in the service of the city and guide them through the ship. It was not until the spring of 2006 that he himself went on a tour of France with his ship. Until then he had completed the interior work.

Until the end he lived on the ship with his wife. After Zanella's death, the ship anchored in Sarreguemines was offered for sale. In 2017 it was said that it should remain in the family's possession after all, and that it should be lifted out of the water in the summer of 2017 and brought ashore to the family's property in Spittel , 40 km away .
