The Makadam-Straße near Pfingstberg was the first artificial road / Chaussee built in the Duchy of Holstein . The road was built in 1825/1826 using the macadam method.

The experience made with the road built according to the new method led to the fact that the macadam method was used for the construction of all other artificial roads in Holstein (until 1867). The first longer route that was then built was the Altona-Kieler Chaussee , which was built from 1830 - which is why the Makadam-Strasse near Pfingstberg is known as the "experimental road".

The approx. 2 km long section of the road from Plön to Lübeck (today part of state road 309) near the village of Pfingstberg (municipality of Bösdorf ) was selected for the construction of the road , which until then had been sandy and steep due to the particularly difficult subsoil Terrain cut at Pfingstberg - was difficult to drive on.

The Danish King and Duke of Holstein Friedrich VI. had the road built according to the method developed by the Scotsman John Loudon McAdam (which was later named after him as the "macadam method").

In order to obtain the required building material stone gravel , the field stones on site (which had partly served as pavement on the previous street) were crushed (which was made easier by heating the stones in the fire and then cooling them down quickly). This procedure was necessary because there is no suitable quarry in Schleswig-Holstein for geological reasons .

To commemorate the construction of the road, a carved stone with the Latin inscription: JVSSV ET IMPENSIS FRIDERICI VI HOCCE STADIVI PRIMVM IN HOLSATIA STRATVM EST RATIONE MACADAMI BRITANNICI - MDCCCXXVI was erected in 1826 (- German  At the command and expense of Frederick VI, this route is the first (created) in Holstein by the method of British MacAdam - 1826 . )

Another story

Memorial stone for the expansion of the road in 1928
  • In 1928 the road was expanded - a stone with the inscription reminds of this: AFTER THE GREAT WAR AND DESPITE THE NEED OF TIME, THIS ROAD WAS RENOVATED AND ADOPTED INTO THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE DISTRICT OF PLÖN - MDIDXXVIII
  • In 1999 - after another renovation, a boulder with the inscription Straßeausbau Pfingstberg 1999 was added.

These three stones together with an information board form a small memorial site.
