Malcolm Nokes 1923

Malcolm Cuthbert Nokes (born May 2, 1897 in Edmonton , Greater London , † November 22, 1986 in Alton , Hampshire ) was a British athlete who specialized in the hammer throw . He started for the Achilles Club .

Nokes won four national championships in a row:

  • 1923 (49.19 m)
  • 1924 (51.12 m)
  • 1925 (46.04 m)
  • 1926 (48.62 m)

He was also successful at the Olympic Games. In 1924 in Paris he won the bronze medal with 48.87 m just ahead of the Finn Erik Eriksson . Gold and silver went to the Americans Fred Tootell (53.29 m) and Matt McGrath (50.84 m) with widths of over 50 m . In 1928 in Amsterdam he started again, but with 45.37 m could not qualify for the final of the six best throwers and came eleventh.

At the British Empire Games he won the gold medal for England starting in 1930 in Hamilton and 1934 in London with widths of 47.13 m and 48.25 m respectively; in addition, a fifth place in the discus throw came in 1930 .

Nokes was placed in the top ten of the world's best list seven times:

  • 1921: 5th place with 48.94 m, achieved on July 28th in Travers Island
  • 1922: 5th place with 49.25 m, achieved on July 1st in London
  • 1923: 2nd place with 52.76 m, achieved on July 29 in Paris
  • 1924: 3rd place with 51.88 m, achieved on July 19 in London
  • 1925: 3rd place with 50.16 m, achieved on August 30th in Dublin
  • 1926: 2nd place with 50.48 m, achieved on August 2nd in Dublin
  • 1927: 8th place with 49.62 m, achieved on July 16 in Manchester

Nokes was a graduate of the University of Oxford . Initially he taught chemistry at Malvern College and Harrow School . He later worked at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell and in a laboratory at CENTO in Iran .
