Maldaque

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maldaque was a folk group named after the Regensburg elementary school teacher Elly Maldaque , who was driven to her death in 1930 by right-wing forces. The group Maldaque existed from 1982 to 1986 and developed two stage programs during this time.

history

Maldaque was founded in 1982 at the University of Regensburg . The external reason was a so-called die-in against nuclear war . In front of the cafeteria entrances, students suddenly fell into a numbness to demonstrate the devastating consequences of a nuclear conflict. Musicians accompanied the action with songs by Kurt Tucholsky . The success of this performance led to the formation of a permanent group.

The first full-length program was called " Weimar in the mirror of burned poets" . To commemorate the book burnings of the Nazis and their history texts of Tucholsky, were Kaestner , Brecht and others recited.

In keeping with the topic, they wanted to name themselves after a victim of the Weimar middle class and reaction . During research, one came across the fate of the Regensburg elementary school teacher Elly Maldaque. Walter Mehring's “Ballad by the teacher Elly Maldaque” , set to music by the pianist of the group Rudi Kammermeier, became a signature song.

Maldaque consisted mostly of students and had between seven and ten members. Musically they orientated themselves to formations such as Liederjan or Zupfgeigenhansel . The focus, however, was on polyphonic singing. Therefore Maldaque can also be described as a choir with instrument accompaniment. Cabaret elements were strongly represented. After every three to four songs there were scenic interludes.

The second program dealt with post-war history from 1945 to the rearmament in 1956. It was called "Care" , after the Allies' care packages . This time texts from German cabaret groups from the time were processed. In nine months of extensive research, including in the German Cabaret Archive in Mainz, and with the support of one of the pioneers of German cabaret, Therese Angeloff , founder of the Munich cabaret group Kleine Fisch , songs by Das Kom (m) ödchen , Die Hinterbliebenen and others were compiled.

Maldaque appeared all over Bavaria , often at trade union events, because the group felt a strong connection to the labor movement. In 1985, according to the guitarist of the group Jürgen Grande, the climate at the University of Regensburg changed . The student body became increasingly apolitical and there was hardly an environment for socially critical groups like Maldaque. In 1986 Maldaque disbanded. At the end of the eighties, the musicians came together for a one-off Maldaque memorial concert.

The group's wedding was a little over three years. But her appearances ensured that the name of the teacher Elly Maldaque became known far beyond Regensburg and could thus be saved from being forgotten.
