occupation

Malmkrog is a 2020 feature film. Directed by Cristi Puiu based on the book Tri rasgowora by Vladimir Sergeyevich Solovyov .

The film had its world premiere on February 21, 2020 as the opening film of the newly introduced Encounters section of the Berlinale .

action

An illustrious group is gathered in the aristocratic Nikolais family, discussing war, peace, morality, death and the Antichrist. Divided into six chapters, each named with the names of the protagonists, the film shows a series of conversations, all of which are conducted in French, as was common in the Russian aristocracy at the time.

Place of action

Cristi Puiu places the panel discussion that spends Christmas on the French Riviera in the literature in a snow-covered aristocratic castle, which in the few exterior shots is recognizable as the castle of the Hungarian noble family Apafi in the Transylvanian village of Malmkrog .

reception

In her review for Die Zeit, Wenke Husmann describes the film as a “dense chamber play”: “It's hard to believe that this cinematographic ballet was created without a fixed script. But it was important to him to involve the actors in the creation process, Puiu said about his way of working, because he doesn't trust himself - and because he isn't entitled to - to make a film out of someone else's text which he alone determines. ”The two new directors of the Berlinale have announced that they will show films that deal with fundamental questions of human existence. "The new side series" Encounters "should be a place for films that attempted this with unusual cinematic means and under unusual production conditions. In Malmkrog you can see what cinema can do if that succeeds."

Awards

For Malmkrog, Cristi Puiu won the directing award of the newly introduced Berlinale Encounters section.
