history

Celtiberians settled here in pre- Roman times . The current village was probably formed during the medieval Reconquista . It was first mentioned as Mamoa rasa in 1020. The place name is derived from Mamoas , prehistoric tombs which the Romans called Mammulas because of their similarity to female breasts .

King D. Sancho I bequeathed Mamarrosa in 1193 to an order of monk knights who had made a name for themselves in the conquest of Silves from the Moors in 1189. In 1282 Mamarrosa was again directly owned by the king.
