Mammillaria marksiana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the travel companion of the cactus collector Fritz Schwarz, Mr. H. Marks.

description

Mammillaria marksiana first grows individually and later also in groups. The light green to yellowish green shoots are flattened, broadly spherical and sunk at the apex and are woolly. They grow to be 6 to 15 inches high and 5 to 12 inches in diameter. The pyramidal, slightly square warts contain milky sap . The axillae are woolly. The thorns are difficult to divide into central spines and radial spines. There are a total of 4 to 21 thorns. They are needle-like, golden yellow to brown and 5 to 8 millimeters long.

The bright greenish yellow flowers are 1.5 centimeters long and have the same diameter. The fruits are club-shaped, dark to purple red and up to 2 inches long. They contain small brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria marksiana is common in the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Durango , Sonora, and Sinaloa .

It was first described in 1948 by Hans Krainz . A synonym is Mammillaria sonorensis var. Marksiana (Krainz) E. Kuhn (1980, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
