Ex Gürke) Doweld (2000).

Mammillaria littoralis K.Brandegee (1907), Mammillaria occidentalis (Britton & Rose) Boed were included in the species . (1933), Mammillaria mazatlanensis var. Occidentalis (Britton & Rose) Neutel. (1986), Mammillaria mazatlanensis var. Monocentra R.T. Craig (1945), Mammillaria occidentalis var. Monocentra (RTCraig) Backeb. (1961), Mammillaria occidentalis var. Sinalensis R.T. Craig (1945), Mammillaria patonii var. Sinalensis (RTCraig) Backeb. (1961), Neomammillaria patonii Bravo (1931) and Mammillaria patonii (Bravo) Boed. (1933).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria mazatlanensis subsp. mazatlanensis :
The nominate form has 1 to 3 central spines, radial spines 12 to 18. The flowers are pink to carmine-red to reddish purple. Occurrence in the entire distribution area.
  • Mammillaria mazatlanensis subsp. patonii (Bravo) DRHunt :
It was first described in 1931 as Neomammillaria patonii by Helia Bravo Hollis . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1998 as a subspecies to Mammillaria mazatlanensis . The subspecies always has 4 central spines, radial spines 13 to 15. The flowers are purple. It occurs exclusively off the coast of the state of Nayarit on the Tres Marias Islands .
