Mammillaria picta is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet picta means '(Latin pictus) spotted, brightly painted'.

description

Mammillaria picta grows individually with tuberous roots. The spherical to obovate, dark green shoots are 4 to 5 centimeters high and have the same diameter. The cylindrically shaped warts do not contain milk juice . The axillae are covered with slightly twisted, hair-like bristles. The 1 to 2  central spines are protruding, straight, brownish and up to 1 centimeter long. The 10 to 20 radial spines are downy-haired, basal yellow, above white with a dark tip or amber yellow. They are up to 1 inch long, the bottom four are very long and slender and white.

The greenish white flowers are broadly funnel-shaped. They are 0.9 inches long and 1.1 inches in diameter. The red fruits are elongated. They contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria picta is common in the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí , Tamaulipas and Nuevo León .

It was first described in 1858 by Karl Friedrich Meinshausen (1819–1899).

Synonyms are: Escobariopsis picta (Meinsh.) Doweld (2000), Mammillaria schieliana Schick (1949), Chilita schieliana (Schick) Buxb. (1954, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Mammillaria aurisaeta Backeb. (1962, nom. Inval. ICBN article 8.4), Mammillaria viereckii Boed. (1927), Ebnerella viereckii (Boed.) Buxb. (1954, nom. Inval. ICBN article 33.3), Mammillaria picta var. Viereckii (Boed.) E. Kuhn (1975, nom. Inval. ICBN article 33.3) and Escobariopsis viereckii (Boed.) Doweld (2000).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria picta subsp. picta :
    The nominate form has clearly distinguishable 1 to 2 central spines. Radial spines 10 to 14.
  • Mammillaria picta subsp. viereckii (Boed.) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1927 as Mammillaria viereckii by Friedrich Bödeker . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria picta . The subspecies has central spines, which are indistinguishable from the radial spines. Thorns a total of 12 to 20 amber yellow, bristle-like.

Mammillaria picta is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. classified as not endangered in nature.
