Mammillaria sphaerica is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet sphaerica means '(lat. Sphaericus) spherical'.
description
Mammillaria sphaerica often grows in groups that often make up to 50 centimeters in diameter. The spherical shoots measure up to 5 centimeters in diameter. The conical to cylindrical shaped, flaccid warts do not contain milk juice . The axillae are slightly woolly. A yellowish central spine is present. It is straight and 3 to 6 millimeters long. The 12 to 14 radial spines are straight, whitish to light yellow and 6 to 8 millimeters long.
The bright lemon-yellow flowers are 6 to 7 centimeters in diameter. The greenish to more or less purple colored fruits have a pleasant scent. They contain black seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria sphaerica is common in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas .
It was first described in 1853 by Albert Gottfried Dietrich . Synonyms of Mammillaria sphaerica A.Dietr. are Mammillaria longimamma var. sphaerica (A.Dietr.) K.Brandegee ex Bailey (1900) and Dolichothele sphaerica (A.Dietr.) Britton & Rose (1923).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
