Mammillaria winterae is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet winterae honors the nursery owner Hildegard Winter (1893–1975), the sister of Friedrich Ritter .
description
Mammillaria winterae usually grows individually or occasionally in groups. The light green to blue-green shoots are depressed spherical. They measure 20 to 30 centimeters in diameter. The warts are keeled square and contain milk juice . The axillae are initially bare, later covered with thick wool but without bristles. The 4 central spines are strongly needle-like, straight or slightly curved. They are up to 3 centimeters long and are light gray or slightly reddish, with a brown tip. The radial spines are completely absent.
The yellowish white flowers have a sulfur yellow central stripe. They grow up to 3 inches long and 2.5 inches in diameter. The club-shaped fruits are red. They contain brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria winterae is common in the Mexican states of Nuevo León , Coahuila, and Tamaulipas .
It was first described in 1929 by Friedrich Bödeker .

Mammillaria winterae subsp. aramberri D.R.Hunt :
The first description was in 1997 by David Richard Hunt . A synonym is Mammillaria crassimammilis Repp. (1987). The subspecies grows in groups. The warts are narrow and the thorns are only 8 millimeters long. -
Mammillaria winterae subsp. winterae :
Synonyms are Mammillaria zahniana Boed. & F.Ritter (1929) and Mammillaria freudenbergi Repp. (1987). The nominate form almost always grows individually. The thorns are up to 3 inches long.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
