Mandy Schumacher

Mandy Schumacher (* 1976 in Hottendorf , Gardelegen district as Mandy Zepig ) is a German local politician. In 2015 she was elected mayor of the Hanseatic city of Gardelegen in Saxony-Anhalt .

Career

Mandy Schumacher is an SPD member and was chairwoman of the SPD local association Gardelegen until 2015.

In the runoff election on March 8, 2015, Schumacher was elected mayor of the Hanseatic city of Gardelegen under her maiden name with 60.22% of the votes. Competitor Kai-Michael Neubüser ( CDU ) got 39.78 percent. She took office on July 4, 2015. Gardelegen is the third largest municipality in terms of area in the German federal territory and consists of 49 districts in 26 localities, each with its own local mayor.

Schumacher is an assessor on the board of the SPD Saxony-Anhalt . There she is responsible for the district association Westliche Altmark.

Activities as mayor

When it became public at the end of 2016 that the state government of Saxony-Anhalt, completely unexpectedly, did not intend to plan any funds for the construction of the new documentation center of the Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Gardelegen memorial in the state's 2017/2018 double budget, which had already been decided by the state parliament in 2012 , Schumacher jointly initiated passed a resolution to the city council of the Hanseatic city of Gardelegen calling on the state government to implement this construction project as planned. In March 2017, the state parliament approved the new budget with the funds for the project. As mayor, Schumacher took part in the laying of the foundation stone in June 2018.

Schumacher pays particular attention to the comprehensive supply of crèche and kindergarten places in the Hanseatic city. In 2019 she achieved the reintroduction of maternal counseling in the district.

In order to combat the shortage of teachers, Schumacher set up the “Guard Teachers” program in 2018. The Hanseatic city of Gardelegen is looking for teachers “who want to live and teach in Gardelegen.” The city has made the following offer: It grants a scholarship for student teachers in required subjects and forms of schools. These are funded with a monthly amount of 300 euros if, in return, they undertake to teach in the unified municipality of Gardelegen after taking their second state examination or career examination.

In 2019, Schumacher signed a project contract to supply the city with high-speed internet using fiber optic cables.

In order to support local retailers and service providers in view of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , she initiated the "Gardelegen voucher" portal in March 2020.
