Manfred Berro (born May 16, 1966 in Zeitz ) is a former German canoeist . His specialty was the two-man canoe .
Career
athlete
Berro started canoeing at the age of seven at BSG Chemie Zeitz . A year later he switched to Motor Zeitz. He celebrated his first successes in a single kayak , before he switched to the two and became GDR champion several times with his partner Ralf Kretschmer . Berro applied to study at the Sports University in Leipzig, but after the Olympic discipline ended in 1972, the GDR no longer supported the sport. After his partner Kretschmer went to the National People's Army, Berro formed a new pair with Michael Trummer . In this combination, both became members of the GDR junior national team. After reunification, both of them were able to compete in the Canoe Slalom World Cup for the first time outside of the GDR, Poland and the Czech Republic. With second place in Nottingham in June 1994, he achieved his best individual World Cup result.
At the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Ljubljana in 1991 , Berro won bronze with Trummer and thus qualified for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , where canoe slalom was again included in the Olympic program. He finished the races in Barcelona in ninth place with Trummer. At the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Nottingham in 1995 , the duo won bronze again. A year later, in fourth place, both narrowly missed the medal ranks at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta . After another bronze medal at the Canoe Slalom World Championships in 1997 in Três Coroas Berro ended his active career.
In 2008, Berro took part in the German Senior Championship, the German Masters, and won gold in the two-man canoe with his partner.
Entrepreneur
In 1999 Berro founded a company near his home in Bad Kösen with which he offers rubber dinghy and canoe tours on the Saale . In 2015 he took over the Saale shipping company Bad Kösen with the seasonal passenger service between the city and the Rudelsburg and the operation of the local ferry. In April 2017, Berro also took over the ferry service on the Blumentgrund in Naumburg (Saale) .
