Athletic career

Manfred Fuchs began his goalkeeping career at BSG Motor Ascota in Karl-Marx-Stadt, today's Chemnitz and later stood in the gate at Motor West Karl-Marx-Stadt . In 1964 he moved to the upper division Wismut Aue. There he played his first game on the occasion of the Olympic Cup on September 27, 1964 at FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and suffered a 6-0 defeat. Until 1966 he was mostly used in the reserve team of the Erzgebirge. Manfred Fuchs played his first league game on August 10, 1966 at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig (1: 2). By 1973 he completed a total of 115 league games. His last league game was on April 29, 1973 at FC Karl-Marx-Stadt (0: 4).

Fuchs, who was trained as a qualified sports teacher, began his coaching career in 1976 with the Wismut Aue junior league team. On July 1, 1977, Fuchs took over the training of the Auer Oberliga team. After the team had only reached places in the lower third of the league for four years and had barely escaped relegation in 1981, Wismut Aue separated from Manfred Fuchs in the summer of 1981. He then went back to Karl-Marx-Stadt, where he was an assistant trainer at FCK under Manfred Lienemann . Both could not reach more than midfield, and since the club officials had higher goals, both had to leave the club after the 1984/85 season. The next coaching station of Manfred Fuchs was the relegated league chemistry Leipzig , where he struggled two seasons to get promoted again. After the disappointing 10th place after the 1986/87 season, Fuchs had to take his hat back. He returned to his hometown, where he was now a coach for the GDR league club Motor Fritz Heckert .
