Manfred Jurgensen (born March 26, 1940 in Flensburg ) is a German - Australian literary scholar , Germanist and writer .

Life

Manfred Jurgensen grew up in Flensburg and has lived in Australia since 1961 . He studied German at the University of Melbourne and at the University of Zurich , where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1968 with a thesis on Goethe's aesthetics . From 1981 to 1999 he was Professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Queensland ; he was also visiting professor in Germany , Switzerland , the United States and South Africa . Jurgensen was the editor of a number of specialist literary journals , from 1984 to 1996 he was also the editor of the literary magazine Outrider and numerous works on contemporary German-speaking authors and on German-Australian cultural relations. In addition to his work as a literary scholar and critic , Jurgensen also works as an author . Initially, he wrote his works partly in German , partly in English , and from the 1990s almost exclusively in English. He now lives in Kangaroo Point , near the center of Brisbane, and is a writer of narrative works, poetry and plays .

Manfred Jurgensen is u. a. Member of the International Association for German Studies , the International PEN and the Australian Society of Authors . He has received a number of Australian literary grants and in 1997 the Australian Medal of Honor " Order of Australia " and the German Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class for his contribution to the promotion of German-Australian cultural relations .

He is a multiple Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, most recently at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Jurgensen's literary, especially lyrical, works in English and German have received multiple awards. The literary study "The Most Fabulous Thing in the World". The death in German literature was published in 2010. His last publications are the volume of poetry The River. Love Songs of an Alien Son (2016) and the novel Deutschlands Ende (2017).
